Hiking - Walking: Upper Hollesley Common Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: 10 Sea Temperature: Weather: cloudy Max Speed: Distance Covered:
The main walk is today but had a couple of shorter walks over the weekend
which are worth a quick mention :)
Sat 10th Mar. After yesterdays okay windsurfing session at Levington our
son came home for the weekend :) So first thing Sat morning Mag and I went
to The Dip/Felixstowe for the first time this year for breakfast in our van
and were met by an amazing sight - When two fishermen got more than they
bargained for when they set off from The Dip, Felixstowe in their small
boat in search of a few herring for tea. After laying their drift nets they
encountered a large shoal of herring and caught several hundred!!! how they
got them in the boat is beyond me. My wife Maggie and I watched in
amazement as they landed their large catch and spent several hours removing
the lovely silver fish from the nets. In all the years living here
including many many hours windsurfing from The Dip we have never ever seen
anything like it :) Maggie gave the fisherman several plastic bags so the
fishermen could give some of their fish away to people walking along the
prom. We took a bag full and with the help of my son, Rob home for the
weekend and after watching a ‘How to gut a herring’ video on youtube
set about preparing 15 of them and had a bbq in the garden as Mag didn’t
want the house to smell of fish ! Sadly we were not too keen on them –
too many bones for us :( So this did include a short walk toward the Ferry
before going home for the bbq Then we had some friends around in the
evening for a chinese and cards :) Great night !!!
Sun.11th Mar. Our cat woke us really early so Mag and I got up and walked
the short distance to the sea at the end of our road to watch the sunrise -
I managed to get some nice pics and the tide was really low before walking
to the end of the prom. Then home for breakfast before taking Rob to The Dip
and this time we made it all the way to The Ferry and beyond seeing a seal
in the rivermouth and a snow bunting on the shore. We then returned to
watch England beat France away in the rugby in a very exciting game !!!!
:)
Mon.12th Mar. So we get to the real walk !!! - After seeing Rob off for his
return to work in Surrey Mag and I pack a picnic and drive over to Upper
Hollesley Common in search of Crossbills. We park up at midday and head to
the muddy puddle where the crossbills water and find a man with a big
camera who said he hadn't seen any today :( so we then headed off for a 4
hour walk around the woods and heath, although cloudy and a bit on the
chilly side we had a great time and saw 10 deer,4 squirrels,1 fox and maybe
a badger !!! We got lost but made it to the old Bentwaters airbase fence
and found where we were on the map :) Oh and I nearly forgot we saw several
Exmoor ponies which have beed introduced to the area !!! We made it back to
the van for a late sandwich before having one last look at the puddle by
the entrance gate for birds when we met a man with an even bigger camera
with a £4000 nikon lense !!! who had seen the crossbills a few hundred
yards along the path so we had another hour looking including an half hour
sitting under some pines by another puddle and this time we were lucky
enough to have a visit from a male and female crossbill - the first we have
ever seen :) My poor old fuji is not up to bird photograhpy but I did
manage to get a couple og grainy shots - oh for a lovely new dslr and a big
lense !!! - just keep doing the lottery !!! So a top top long long weekend
and we are both knackered !!!
If you are interested there are some shots at the end of this album :)
